Have you tried rebuilding the TCP/IP stack with netsh? I'm presuming this is XP.

c:\>netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

When you get the next cmd prompt, reboot and all should be well.

What are the properties/description of the new connection?

Do you have an IP address? Does it match your subnet?
Does it get a gateway? Can you ping it? Can you ping
the DHCP server?

Lots of nasty malware that screw with Win IP stack...
